Murray River Council has a wealth of physical features including majestic sweeping plains; magnificent stands of Redgum forests and is almost totally surrounded by the mighty Murray River and its tributaries.

The area’s natural assets prove to be a large attraction for locals and visitors alike and form the backdrop to many recreational activities. With tourism, industry and an idyllic rural lifestyle, Murray River is a growing region with much to offer.

History

Murray River Council acknowledges Aboriginal people as the traditional custodians of the land on which their offices and services are located. Yorta Yorta, Bangerang, Wamba Wamba and Barapa Barapa Traditional Lands were the original inhabitants and custodians of the area where they have lived for tens of thousands of years.

Recreation & Arts

Murray River Council has a number of sports and recreation reserves across the region which play host to a variety of sports including football, netball, cricket, cycling, tennis, horse racing and basketball. There are also skate parks and public swimming pools.

The area is home to art galleries, museums, public art, Botanic Gardens, wineries and historic sites. As a cross-border community, many people also travel into Victoria to access theatre, cinema, dance, choirs and more.
